As we are jettisoned into 2014, I've been noticing on many blogs around the blogisphere that quilters are reviewing what they've accomplished over this past year.  I was thinking I'd done basically NO sewing at all this year but in looking over my 2013 posts, I actually got a few things done!!  Surprise, surprise!!  It appears I quit quilting altogether around June, probably sensing that I really needed to get my rear in gear if I actually thought I'd be able to buy a house, sell a house and get all the stuff transferred from one house to the other!!  So that got done but I've been having SO much work done around here, trying to get some stuff in it's place and clearing the garage enough that I could get my car in there (though not before the first ice storm of course..duh!).  But I did finally get the car in..YAY!

I've been going through the gazillion books, magazines and patterns trying to ditch the things I know I'll never do and trying to pick a couple I really would like to start on in the new year.  I have managed to cull some things so that's good.  Probably should cull a lot more!!

I'm supposed to go bowling with the family tonight.  They've been doing that for a few years now but I've never joined them.  Frank and I always preferred staying in for New Year's mostly because of all the crazies out there on the road.  We'll see if I make it since they don't even start bowling til 10.   And then my sister and I, along with all the family, will celebrate our birthdays tomorrow (hers is tomorrow and mine's the 4th) eating at our favorite fried chicken place, Babe's!!

Hope you all have a fantastic, healthy & happy New Year!!

We had a GREAT Christmas yesterday.  The family gathered at my niece's house (thank heavens!!) and enjoyed so much food it wasn't even funny!!  There were 15 of us and, as per our usual custom, we take family photos.  We like to include some 'good' and some 'silly'.  My nephew brought 'staches for the ladies for crying out loud but I thought the photos turned out great!!

Aren't we just a bunch of cuties?!!  HA  Anyway, a fun day was had by all and we enjoyed being together.  That's what it's all about, isn't it?!!

I may not post again before Christmas gets here (can't believe it's only 5 days away) so wanted to wish you guys a VERY Merry Christmas!!

And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." Luke 2:10-11

I've had a few folks tell me they've tried to send a comment and it goes back to them.  Not sure what the issue is as I've changed my email for comments so I'm just thinking (the only thing I can guess) is that maybe you need to refresh when you're in my blog?  Or maybe you need to clear your cookies.  Not sure if that's what it takes but I'll keep checking around and see if I can figure out anything else that might be causing the problem.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

more Pres. library pix

The first two photos are of the re-creation of the Bush Oval Office with the Christmas tree.  If the size was accurately represented, it's much smaller than I would've expected.  Methinks it's probably just on a smaller scale but I failed to ask.

Many of you know the Bushes had two Scottish terriers, Barney and Miss Beazley.  If you've not seen the adorable video on you tube of Barney giving a White House tour at Christmas, you can see it here (though I think the narration is kinda hokey! LOL).   There's a bronze of the pair and a BEAUTIFUL picture of Laura Bush dressed so elegantly with the two dogs on red leashes to match Mrs. Bush's dress.  I just LOVE that picture!!

Lastly is a bronze of father and son in an outdoor garden area (that was still COLD and FROZEN!!).

Bush Presidential Library

I had such a fun day today.  Went with my niece and her two boys to the Bush Presidential Library.  Had been meaning to get over there since it opened but this was really perfect timing.  Due to weather conditions (which were really non-existent today), it was SO not crowded AND they also had a special Christmas exhibit so SCORE!!  There are several photos I will share so just be forewarned....

I liked the quotes from President Bush in the first two pictures, thought the next picture of Laura in her red dress was so pretty.  Then some images from 911.  Big twisted steel beams from one of the towers, walls with names of all of those who perished as a result of the attack and a photo of President Bush at ground zero with the bullhorn.  I vividly remember that day, where we were watching as the attack unfolded.  My husband was an air traffic controller at the time and they were charged with the task of emptying the skies of all aircraft in record time--a job they managed very professionally.  The last photo is a picture of one of the boys (he's kinda dark as no flash photography was allowed) in front of one of the Christmas trees from the White House just after 911.  The Christmas decorations that year were not seen by the general public as the White House was still closed after the attack.  So it was nice to be able to see it here.

I will post a few more photos tomorrow from our visit.  It is a beautifully done Presidential library.  We asked about the Bushes and how often they showed up.  We were told about once a month but I knew today would not be one of them as they were just in South Africa for the Mandela tribute/memorial service.

The weatherman just said today's low was 31 and high was 33!!  What's up with that?!  And we're 25 degrees lower than normal for this time of year.  I really should be on a cruise to somewhere balmy.  But, hopefully, it will warm up and this stuff WILL all melt away!!

Still haven't been doing any stitching--think I'm overwhelmed with all the crapola I have (even though I thought I got rid of a lot) and can't even begin to think of where I'll put it all.  Just need to get my rear in gear and start cutting pillowcase kits for the church quilt group.  That'll go through a lot of yardage pretty darned quick.  But then I have to decide which to use for that and which I wanna keep.  Yeegads, the decisions are paralyzing me.  LOL

So instead, I've been crocheting the little baby hats again.  Horrible, blurry picture but it'll hafta do.

OK, this is getting ridiculous!!  We've not been above freezing for 3 solid days and our ice pack on streets and sidewalks is crazy!  I know lots of you around the country are saying 'oh boo hoo, we put up with that for a good part of winter!'.  But we DON'T..we aren 't used to it nor do we have the tools and equipment to deal with it like you guys.  So bear with us while we whine and moan! LOL  But there IS a glimmer of hope today--for FOUR hours,  it's supposed to get above freezing.  Of course, just long enough to do a little melting then it will refreeze again this evening making tomorrow's rush hour pure JOY!  HA  Sure glad I don't have to be out there with all the nuts.

This was such a pretty 'foggy' moon a couple of nights ago.  Wish I'd been able to capture it a little better but man was it gorgeous!
I'm wondering if the tail over the back helps to keep this little fellow warm.  He sat there like a statue for the longest time.  No clue what he was doing but he sure was cute!

more snow photos

Can you see that poor little dove all puffed up behind the fence over there?  He must be FREEZING!!
Guess it's too cold for little bird feet to try standing on the perch to eat a few seeds.  Too bad those perches aren't heated!  LOL
And even with a fur coat, I bet it's STILL hard to stay warm out there.  I often think about the homeless but especially in weather like this.  I hope they're all warm inside a shelter and haven't decided to try braving the elements.

Well, this was WAY more than I thought we'd get!!   That branch in the last photo is hanging WAAY lower than it normally does.  Sure hope it doesn't snap cause that's part of a HUGE live oak that I'd really hate to lose any of!!   I stayed in yesterday and looks like I'll be staying in a couple of days longer (which is OK with me unless, of course, I lose my electricity which MANY in the area already have).    Made me some taco soup yesterday and roasted a butternut squash to make soup with it today.  Can you tell I LOVE soup?

If it's cold where you are, stay warm!

Happy December

Once again, we're having fabulous weather but that will change (again and UNFORTUNATELY) at the end of the week.  A couple of nights ago, the sunset was so pretty and the clouds were awesome.

And I had some cute little birds at the feeder--I don't think we have black-capped so I think this is a Carolina chickadee and then the titmouse turned his/her head just as I snapped the photo.

Even though..

I've already wished you a HAPPY THANKSGIVING, I just saw this and had to share.  Found it HILARIOUS!!

Monday, November 25, 2013

I know you're probably sick of seeing all kinds of stuff that's NOT quilting but I haven't sewn in I can't remember how long.  What with the packing, moving, unpacking (while lots of remodeling going on), it's just NOT happening.  I sure hope maybe shortly after Thanksgiving, I can do a LITTLE something.  And if I do, I'll be sure to post about it cause it'll be BIG NEWS!  LOL

But I did FINALLY get my new camera and I think I'm really gonna love it.  I'm not real adept at photography but would like to take a class (maybe with my niece) to learn to do at least a few things better.  It's cold and wet today but I poked my head out the back door and took a couple of photos.  I think they turned out pretty good.

Sunday, November 17, 2013

MAN, yesterday and today were absolutely BEAUTIFUL days!  After a really early cold snap last week and a couple of nights in the upper twenties, today was at least 85 (by my car's thermometer anyway).   So needless to say instead of staying inside getting stuff put away, I was outside messin' around.  Still lots of gorgeous foliage around though it's really difficult to get the full impact given these lousy pictures taken with my cell phone (can't WAIT til that Sony camera arrives so the real picture taking can begin).

And then I noticed a small flock of Canadian geese by a little pond so naturally had to take another crummy photo with the cell phone; my presence didn't seem to bother them too much--

A day to remember?

Last year it was 10/11/12, this year is 11/12/13 and next year will be 12/13/14.  After that, what?!  Just curious....LOL!!

Just had to share this beautiful quilt which was one of the many winners from the Houston Quilt Festival.  Drawn to this one as (I believe) the name was "Oklahoma Windsong" and the maker is from Oklahoma City!!  I grew up in Oklahoma City and still consider myself part Okie, part Texas (even though I was born in MD!!).  Those beautiful birds in the quilt are Scissor Tail Flycatchers and the state bird of Oklahoma .  BEAUTIFUL!!  I am constantly amazed at the creativity of so many quilters (unfortunately, I am not one of them).

Lots of people think we here in Texas don't have a fall  season or the color
associated with fall.  WELL, these pictures prove it ain't so!!  I'm not claiming we have anything near what New England has but still.....aren't they pretty?  And I don't think we've hit our 'peak' yet.

I've been doing a small bit of cutting/sewing but nothing I want to show yet.  I've mostly been busy "supervising" my handyman (who needs absolutely NO supervision whatsoever as his work is perfection).  He's been putting up some stockade fencing of late and tomorrow----I GET MY GRANITE!!!  I can't WAIT!! YIPPEE!!  Need to take before and after photos.

Thursday, October 17, 2013

It's been a LONG time since I remember actually sewing anything.  Probably not as long as I remember but pretty sure it's been quite awhile.  But I decided I needed to get busy putting some of my ton of scraps into something for donation.  I really like Bonnie Hunter's Dancing 9 patch (I think that's what she calls it) and I'd started her Scrappy Trips quite some time ago with white running thru the center of each block.  So I've been cutting 2 and 2.5" strips for those (or digging them out of the bin).  And I saw a beautiful Pineapple Blossom also patterned by Bonnie on another blog made in Christmas colors and LOVED that idea so have been cutting pieces and parts for one of those as well.

But the one thing I DID do today was try out a technique I saw over on Paulette's blog that looked interesting.  That's a TERRIBLE picture and the color  isn't right but at least you can kinda see the design, can't you?!  I've been cutting 11" squares to be used in these blocks as I cut the above pieces for the other projects.  Paulette's is all pretty in blues and tans but mine's just gonna be totally scrappy doo!  I'll try to do mostly brights and most likely will go to the women's shelter.  I like this technique as the finished block looks like it would be much harder than it was.  And I ALWAYS like things you can trim down.

Still in the middle of various and sundry remodeling projects.  Went and picked out granite today so we'll see how long that'll take.  Picked out carpet and bathroom flooring but need to get everything measured so that can be ordered.  And tomorrow have 3 peeps coming to give me estimates on replacement windows.  $$$$$ is all I see when I dream and those $$$$$ are flying out of my bank account!!!!
