Even though

I do NOT like Christmas, I do like the reds and greens of Christmas.  On a whim, I decided to make a red and green quilt (a very simple one) and am unsure whether I will keep it or donate it.  I've made SO many of these blocks for the HOB and QOV quilts so this is what I'm going with.  I'm doing a little 'star' in the sashing but not sure I like it.  I'll have to see how it goes in the process.  This will most likely be 4 blocks by 5 so including sashing and a border, it'll be approx. 60x72.  I think there are 8 more of these blocks made up that I slapped up on the design wall so getting close.

Jamestown is still coming along slowly.  I have the pieces and parts for 4 more blocks currently so need to sit and sew those together and TONS of the half square triangle blocks to sew and trim up.  Today's a good day to be doing that as it's drizzly and yucky.

Christmas

Some of you may know I really do NOT like Christmas.  Since the passing of my DH 7 1/2 yrs ago to the happenings since (disintegration of the family and the death of my sister this past October),  this is an extremely difficult season for me.  I HATE the 'falling back' part of daylight savings time, bringing on shorter days and LLONNGG (for me) nights.  I detest all of the Christmas commercials.  So let me just say I'm so happy the day is here and now we can put it behind us (until next year anyway).  Sorry to be a downer but I hope none of you have to experience the loneliness of Christmas.  Now on to 2020 (and MORE DAYLIGHT HOURS!)!!

Mr. Fang

I had to have my beloved cat, Mr. Fang, put to sleep today and that makes Christmas that much worse!  He was my boy, my companion and he was 17 1/2 yrs. old.  He wasn't perfect but he was with me always.  He'd been having some labored breathing the past couple of days and I didn't want him suffering, unsure if it was fixable or no.  The vet showed me his x-rays and his lungs were really compressed--no wonder he'd been having a hard time.  Unsure exactly what it was and not wanting to put him through a lot of procedures AND the vet saying a high likelihood would be cancer, I opted to let him go gently.  Besides going through all I went through with my DH the final year of his life, this was the hardest thing I've ever had to do.  I will never have another animal again just because it's too hard at the end.  Rest in peace, my boy, you will be greatly and sorely missed.

I HATE CHRISTMAS and I loved this cat!!

Bonnie's table runner

Bonnie posted her cute little project the other day and I had to get busy!  It was relatively quick though, as always, I had to do a little ripping 😕.  But it's nearly done, just needs to be quilted as does the Halloween runner.  Not sure why I make stuff like this as I don't host holiday meals, friends, nothing!  Once a year, I have the Bunco Broads over but this coming year my month is May.  Neither of the runners fit the bill for May.  Oh well....

I know

I haven't finished posting about the places we visited on the cruise but, frankly, I noticed I didn't take a LOT of pix and I need to figure out where they're from before I go posting the wrong place!  It stinks to get old and lose the old memory bank....

So in the meantime, I decided to post my design wall at the present.  Ever since Bonnie Hunter put her Jamestown Landing in a book and I bought said book, I've wanted to make it.  I never got around to it and every time she'd post it as a workshop she was doing somewhere, I think GAH!  I REALLY want to make that!  So finally, when she posted it yet again around October, I said I AM going to start it NOW!  So I got started on it and then the cruise happened and now I've been back awhile and I've continued to work on it and here's where I'm at

I've still got a lot ahead of me yet but at least I can see a tiny shaft of light at the end of the tunnel.  And I'm really loving it!  It's a TON of 1/2 square triangles but they'll get done eventually.  And while I was at it, I took a picture of the other side of the design wall
which contains a hodge podge of other scrap blocks I'm working on for donations.  I saw the house somewhere and thought it would be cute for a donation quilt.  Once I started, I had the idea for another one with brighter colors for the house with little prints in the window (like a cat, a mouse, a bird, a dog, etc) that a kid might enjoy so that'll be next once some of the other stuff is done (although I DO have WAY too many UFO's that really should be finished up first).  We'll see how all that shakes out.

YAY, I did it!!

Just had to post to remind myself that I CAN do something when I make up my mind to do it!!  But I also conned my friend into doing it with me!  LOL  We did a 5K family walk/run and I actually did the entire route (I was telling myself I could take a shortcut if I wanted/needed to but I didn't).  Of course the weather was a touch chilly but not enough that anything more than a jacket was needed.  No clouds, no rain, a light breeze..perfect for a long walk!

Wish I taken some pix of the cute pups that accompanied their people on the walk/run

St. Kitts

We visited the remains of an old sugar factory/rum distillery (it became VERY apparent over the course of the excursions we took in every port that rum is KING throughout the Caribbean islands).

There were two locals hanging out while we were looking around and they had these little monkeys with diapers on.  These two were supposedly brothers about 7 months apart.  Later I asked our guide how these guys got the monkeys and he said they trapped them.  He also said once trapped, they cannot be released back into the wild (but I'm willing to bet they are as they're probably not nearly as cute when they're bigger).  And OH YEAH, my monkey pictures cost me $10!!  Not allowing THAT to happen again!

It was very pretty but all just ruins.  No current operational stuff.  I will say after a couple more excursions, I was getting aggravated at how much time was spent on the bus and how little time was out seeing and doing.

I've been...

on a cruise!!  Just got back last night after spending 11 days cruising the southern Caribbean.  We started off from Fort Lauderdale and hit 6 ports--Ponce, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, Grenada, Barbados and Antigua.  We had mostly good weather with only a couple of rain showers but it was SO hot and humid in the islands that each day returning to the ship from an excursion, I felt like a sweaty hot mess!  I was also once again reminded of how thankful I am to live where I live!

This was the first sunset of the cruise and the best I saw (however, we were usually in the dining room when the sun was setting most nights..grr).

Our first stop was in Ponce, Puerto Rico and I'll just share a couple of photos.  The fountain and lion in the town square.

This very large cross was on the property (I think) of the Serralles castle, home to 3 or 4 generations of the Serralles family who owned sugar plantations, rum distilleries and more (a little more about the place and a few more pictures here ).  The cross had an elevator that took you to the horizontal portion of the cross with stunning, sweeping views of Ponce.  The castle itself was SO gorgeous--can't imagine living the way they did.

Continuing on

I spotted Bonnie Hunter's cute pumpkin table runner a couple of weeks ago and saw that the pattern was half off!  What a deal.  So I ordered and downloaded and let it sit for a bit.  Then I started on the pumpkins and kept going until

WOOHOO!!  It's so cute and I love it though it's not quilted yet and that is NOT my forte.  I hate to screw it up at this point but have considered trying it on my own..we'll see.

Also got a few more Halloween row by rows done but more to go before I'm ready to put it together so will post those later.

Halloween rows

Another "SQUIRREL" caught my eye and I've been making Halloween row by rows.  Seven so far and 4 or 5 to go..MAYBE I'll get the rows together by this Halloween but definitely not the top.  Will just keep plugging away--

Grrr, can't find the picture for the one other made to date.  I will post with the next batch.

Row by row in process

I finally dragged out all my boat rows (with a few more to make) and laid them out to see where I am with this one.

Not really a good picture but what I need to do is sketch is out and see how the sizes fit and decide what more is needed.  These rows are, for the most part 9x36" so with verticals added to the right this puppy will be approx. 90X90.  I'm not a fan of square quilts so modifications will need to be made (one being 2 more horizontal rows and leave off verticals on the right).  That is IF my figuring is correct (math was NEVER a forte for me..ugh).  A few of these were pieced so nothing additional required but I've been working on the top stitching with clear/smoke where needed.  It's coming along slowly but hopefully in a month or so as I'm working on another stuff along with this; we all do that, right? 😄

Final rows of August

Since I posted a bunch of row by rows I completed the first part of August, figured I'd post the remaining ones done this month (since that's about all the sewing/quilting I've been working on).

This one I was debating on leaving the decorative aspect (a bear head and a moose head) off the mugs all the while not even noticing I'd left the coffee/hot chocolate outta the cup.  Good GRIEF!  Wound up putting all in/on the cup so really need another pic.  This will do for now.

Rowing

I haven't been posting very often but I have been doing a little sewing.  This is my fourth or fifth year to be involved in the annual row by row event.  I have LOTS of kits yet to be made and, at this point, no quilts to show for my efforts.  I have so many 'themes' going on over the years and each year there are at least some to add to those themes.  And EVERY year for at least the last two, maybe 3,  I've said I am NOT buying more kits.  But then I see some here and there that are cute and I cave.  Fortunately, I am getting closer to being able to complete 3 or 4 tops as the rows are made.

So, I decided I'd pop in to the old blog and share the rows I've made so far this month.  A few of my themes are beaches, boats, tepees, mountains, hot air balloons, camping, space and more.

Hopefully I'll get at least a couple of tops together before the end of the year!!
