Yet another

Another of my quilts awarded to Jack,  a vet from the Korean war (he's also in my Sunday School class).  I need to get busy and make more of these quilts for someone local or I'll send to Alycia in Colorado.  She has a busy, BUSY QOV group.

Two of my recent row by row blocks

Saturday, December 1, 2018

I have no excuses for not posting.  As I said last comment, it's been too long and now it's REALLY been too long.  A friend and I took a little trip in June to Austria and Switzerland, swerving into a bit of Italy (been there), Germany (need to see more) and Lichtenstein.  It was absolutely gorgeous and we had pretty much perfect weather.

By the time we got home, Row by Row had already begun (and was something I said LAST year I wasn't going to do this year).  If I hadn't looked to start with, none of this would've happened.  I spent a ton of dough and got a lot more rows but at least I've been better at getting them done.  Problem is I still don't have ONE row by row quilt yet.  good grief 😒  Just gonna share photos of a few of the rows--don't wanna bore anyone.

Lots of the ones I've gotten will fit into the 'themes' I had going from the past couple of years, others will be a new 'theme' and the rest will just go into hodge podge quilts.

And then I got to thinking about some others things that need finishing up (as if there's EVER any end to those projects) and decided to set a very small goal for next year.  With Bonnie's newest mystery in the early stages, it reminds me once again of the one and only Bonnie mystery I ever did--Easy Street.  It's pretty much done just waiting for borders, backing and quilting.  So I'm doing quarterly goals with Easy Street as one, getting ONE row by row quilt together, finishing up my Plus and Crosses (I think that's what they were called) blocks done and in a quilt and my Big Nines done and in a quilt as well.  Sounds easy enough but things rarely go as I plan.

It's been quite awhile since I posted on my neglected blog.  I've been going in different directions for awhile and haven't gotten much in the way of sewing done at all.  But just this morning, I got out my red, white and blue to hang for the summer and the holidays coming up!

First, my cute little patriotic pineapples.  I love this little wallhanging and think it fits just about perfect in the spot I made it for--the entryway!

Next is hanging in the living room (taking the place of one of my major faves, the botanical quilt).  This is Jan Patek's pattern and while the kids are dressed like it's winter, the FLAGS stand out the most and will hang most of the summer I think.  Love this one, too, and glad I'm able to hang them for the first time.  YAY!

This is a project (among many others) that I've been working on lately that hopefully I can get done and send to Little Lambs with the H2H project

They've asked that these be small enough and thin enough to be stuffed in a backpack (the suggestion is to use flannel for batting).  I'm still thinking I'll add a small border just to contain all the edges of the strips.

I love string quilts and have several different settings that I've saved.  I really need to make more of them, sooner rather than later.

Friends day

Today, a group of gals went to the GW Bush Presidential Library in Dallas.  I'd been before but right now there's a special exhibit about the first ladies.  It was not a terribly impressive exhibit but I did learn some interesting stuff about Dolly Madison.  She was a snuff user and continued during her time as first lady!  HA  She was also a trend setter in the silk turban department.  Odd.

And apparently Wed. is school day at the presidential library...UGH!  LOTS of kids but most were very well behaved.  Just a few photos from today...

Went chasing wildflowers

My niece was the chauffeur for my sister and I and drove us down to Ennis, TX to see some gorgeous wildflowers.  Our state flower is the bluebonnet and the red beauties are Indian paintbrush.  SO gorgeous en masse

I'm still working on the bunnies but also got a few of these done for other WIPs/UFOs

The string blocks are 11" so I'm thinking 4X4 would be a good size for H2H "Little Lambs" (I think) kids charity.  They want smaller quilts that can fit in a backpack and suggested using flannel instead of batting.  Will check with the longarm quilter about flannel.

And finally
He is risen indeed.  Happy Easter!

Honest opinion needed

You've seen them sans tails; whaddaya think of tails added?  The jury's out here but just wondering what others think.  I thought it might be cute so I just whipped this one out and laid it on (it's not permanent 😀).  So what do YOU think?

Doing what they do...

bunnies, that is!  They're multiplying.  I see I need a more varied assortment of colors (can you tell I like purple?).

Probably more yellow, blue and orange would be good.  Think another one needs different colored ears.  I think cute little tails would be a nice touch (though that's not in the pattern).  We'll see since it will be a donation quilts; the tails might just be more work!

Beginning of bunnies

AH!  So cute!  Can't wait to make more but I'm going to the movies.  More later....

This, that and the other

There's a little bit of several different things going on around here and it only seems to be getting worse (I hate that).  This is mostly of my own creating but others are involved and NOT HELPING!  I belong to a couple of row by row FB groups and awhile back, one gal issued a challenge to get those rows finished.  I ignored her for awhile but there were so many completions happening, I had to jump in and have gotten 4 or 5 (almost) done and have shown a couple here.

My two most recent--and another part of the problem.  I did NOT have the second one already in my possession!!  I had to acquire it because someone named Betty showed her red truck quilt and there were several cute ones.  One HUGE reason why these groups can be big problems!!  LOL

And then Lesley over at The Cuddle Quilter showed her adorable bunny quilt.  Now I HAD been scoping out Easter quilts so I could make one for the entryway.  This one is TOO CUTE and Lesley has gotten me in trouble before.  So that's a new start.  AND I'm thinking this one might also work for a charity project I recently signed up for.

Sarah does this every year and I decided to sign up this year.  There are 3 charities to choose from (1 even in Canada) and several sizes of quilts needed.  I'm thinking a smaller bunny quilt for the kids charity and maybe seeing if my longarmer can use flannel instead of batting as Sarah had suggested.  We'll see.

It's HERE!!!

I love this time of year when the dreary, cold, dark days of winter are behind me and I can finally be WARM again.  I've really got to get my rear in gear and start moving in preparation for a trip to Switzerland and Austria in a few short months.  There's gonna be walkin' going on and I need to be ready!  I need to get my Legacy Box filled up and shipped off--it's been hanging around far too long and I need to get this house in better shape (she's been sadly neglected).

There are also quilts that need finishing.  I signed up to do at least one quilt for Happy Chemo so don't want to dilly dally with that.  But the QOV's need to be front and center so they can be finished and awarded.  The soon to be recipient of one has a dear wife who's been diagnosed with ALS and I want her to be there to see the presentation.

Red sky at night

Sailor's delight..right?  That's what I heard and we had a beaut last night

and I finished a 2nd row (think this was from 2014 or 15?  grrr)

Antique mall visit

I saw a cute idea for a spring-y centerpiece on Lisa Bongean's blog and wanted to be a copycat.  So I ran over to the antique mall to look for an enamelware piece (to no avail 😕).  But I did see this beauty

MAN, that's an UGLY hand!!  But just wanted to show how small the hexies were.  I didn't open it up to see if I could find the price tag.  It was a beauty!!

And then I found this quilt for $35 so it came home with me.

Pretty sure it's not an oldie but I like the blue/white combo.  It's been washed and dried so ready to go (and let me tell you, I needed this like I needed another hole in my head!!).

I've been VERY slowly working on another row by row and it's almost there but not done so I'll wait to show it.  Hopefully tomorrow.

Row by row

I belong to a facebook group that involves actually finishing the row by rows we've bought in the past.  What a concept!!  Actually finishing the rows we've invested big bucks in!  😁  But they've now started a challenge (like to spur us on even more..LOL).  It finally got the best of me and I had to jump in and finish ONE so they didn't make me look quite so bad.

So I got this one done and those balloon fabrics all had to be stitched together, it's not the fabric.  That chevron one was giving me fits but its done and I LIKE it!  Now I need to do another one so I'll feel a tad better about my lack of row by rowing!

Spring is springing

Spring is beginning to come along nicely and I'm SO EXCITED!!  I hate the cold so I've been ready for this since last November.  We did have last night and will have tonite temps in the upper 30's but the days have been nice and warm.  LOVE IT!!

In the course of weeding out stacks and stacks of quilt books (not sure what I will do with all of them yet 😒), naturally I've run across some oldies but goodies!!  This was one of them
and I still love it so it's my intention to begin making pieces and parts of it.  I already had the flying geese rows traced onto paper for paper piecing and some of the applique parts had their templates made.  I'll probably lighten it up some.  I will keep you apprised of my (most likely slow) process.  HA

Ready for the 4th!!

YAY!  I got this back from the longarmer's a couple of days ago and got jiggy with it!  HA  I REALLY wanted this puppy done before it disappeared (like the Valentine quilt).  Miraculously I found enough of the fabric used for the border to also make the binding (I am NOT one of those crazy organized quilters that do that in advance...😒).  So this one, along with the patriotic pineapple, will be ready to hang come Memorial Day right on through Veteran's day.  And I really love this one.

More pillowcases

And again, these were 'found' in one of the bedrooms where too much sewing/quilting accumulates! There were 16 finished in this pile (no clue how they were going to get donated laying in there!!) and a few more not yet begun.  So I've already got a good pile of still to be sewn pillowcases and need to get those fnished up in addition to the last QOV.  I'm spending entirely too much time couch potato-ing watching the Olympics (loved the little Shib sibs, too cute!).

Ahhh, it's done

I don't know what took me so long because Amanda made hers in a day.  Obviously it's been much longer on my end but it (the top) is done and measures 69x78.  I know one reason mine took longer is my pitiful sewing skills.  Even though all blocks were using 3.5" strips and all sewed on the same machine and all (I thought) were the same seam allowance, they weren't going together nicely so I took apart what was already together, trimmed the blocks uniformly and sewed them back together again.  That is SO annoying but it's better (not perfect) now.  The back will be made and then off to the longarmer.  One more to go....

I've been watching the Olympics and just hoping we'd do better in some of the areas but it's all good.  I'd admire Olympians and all they've put into getting there.  My son is off today so we're off to see Black Panther!  I've wanted to see that since it was first mentioned (but then those 'comic inspired' movies are some of my faves).

Happy Valentine's Day!

I made a Valentine quilt and had it quilted but have been unable to find it to hang for Valentine's Day 😭.  It was made like this one but not these colors

really pathetic that I can't find it.  It just needed binding!

I decided to just share a few more Valentine cuties with you to celebrate the day.  These are just some I found on pinterest that I thought were adorable.

Got NO discipline!!

While making the QOVs for the guys in my Sunday School who all served during the Vietnam War, I've tried to make each one unique though I HAVE duplicated a couple of patterns because of the ease of those patterns (mostly the block that was formerly used in the making of the Home of the Brave quilts).  I saw Amanda's quilt and thought that would be a great pattern for a QOV so began digging through the red, white and blue and started one like hers.  The blocks are 9 1/2" so go quickly and the quilt she made is 63X72 (thereabouts) utilizing 56 blocks.  I have half of the blocks done and would like to get it done soon.  Here's a picture of Amanda's

And then I was just poking around on Pinterest and found this cute quilt (called Scrap Strips and Stars by Lisa Sutherland) so I started cutting strips for it!!  I LOVE it!  So these will be two new designs that I've never made for a QOV.  Once I finish up these two new quilts, that'll make the final four I need to present.  But they won't be the last QOVs I ever make.  THAT will continue to happen!!

And just another gratuitous photo of Hooty sunning himself today!  He is SO cute!

I'm amazing myself--LOL

These two QOVs are bordered and (now) pressed and the backings are made.  They're ready to drop at the longarmers..I'll need to give her a call before I just show up!  The funny thing is remember how I've mentioned fairly recently that I've 'found' things (no, still no Valentine quilt)?  Well, I found ONE of the two backings already made!!  LOL  Sure wish that happened more often.  I was digging through my red, white & blue stash looking for big enough pieces to assemble into a backing and I pulled on a blue and lo and behold!  AND it was the perfect size!!  Good grief, was that lucky or what?

I already know what I'm going to do for #3 and there's another that was started some time ago that I just might use for #4 (although I really love that one and was going to keep it but I seriously don't need anymore quilts languishing in the top of the closet).
